The news detonated inside her like a bomb. Her pulse hammered in her ears, drowning out the ambient sounds of the office. She felt a strange tingling in her extremities, like pins and needles.

The air in the office became stifling. Her desk, usually a haven of order, now felt like a prison cell. She had a sudden, overwhelming urge to scream, to lash out.

She pushed back her chair, the wheels screeching across the carpet. She found herself moving rapidly, shoving her things into her bag, not even bothering to organize them. She just had to get out.
