“Hey, Liam, did you ever go to Camp Greenlake?” asked Jessica, while leaning against the doorway. Liam stared at her, the blood draining from his face. He felt his pulse thrumming in his ears. The coffee cup he was holding felt heavy and awkward in his hand.

He shifted his weight from foot to foot, avoiding her inquisitive gaze. He mumbled something unintelligible, desperately hoping she’d just go away. He felt a sudden, urgent need to be anywhere but here. The room felt small, the air thick, and he struggled to take a full breath.
