David found the letter in his grandfather’s old briefcase, tucked away with yellowed newspaper clippings. His grandfather, stoic and reserved, had written these words, a declaration of intent to leave his work. It didn't make sense.

His fingers felt numb. He felt a strange tingling in his extremities. The room tilted precariously. He needed to sit down, to brace himself. His breath came in shallow, ragged gasps. The walls seemed to waver.

He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, a crushing pressure. He felt the blood drain from his face. He fumbled for the nearest chair, collapsing onto it. He had to understand. He had to know *why*.
