The old desk in the spare room was where it was. The letter. The handwriting, familiar, but the words were a shock. Her mother, leaving a job, a life. She stared, her eyes wide, her breath caught in her throat.

She felt a strange, cold numbness spread through her limbs. She felt trapped, suffocated by the implications. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. She felt a burning sensation in her chest.

She had to get out, to *run*. She pushed the chair back, nearly knocking it over. She backed away from the desk, her eyes fixed on the letter. She had to escape this place. She had to flee.
