Mark felt the blood drain from his face as David said the words. He leaned back against the counter, his knees suddenly weak. The clatter of dishes in the sink seemed to amplify the pounding in his ears. His vision blurred for a moment. He hadn't expected this, not now, not ever.

He took a shaky breath, then another, trying to regain control. His chest felt constricted. His hands, usually steady, began to tremble uncontrollably. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. The image of their favorite cafe, their shared laughter, their comfortable routines – all flashed before his eyes, threatened by an impending void.
