Gemotions

The ringing phone felt like an accusation. She snatched it up, her fingers fumbling with the receiver. "Hello?" she croaked, her voice thin and reedy.

It was Mrs. Gable, next door. "Did you see?" the woman's voice shrieked over the line. "The tree! It's… it's on my house!"

Her stomach lurched. She stared at the phone as if it had betrayed her. Her vision swam. Then, she was up, yanking open the front door.

She stumbled outside, tripping over the welcome mat. Mrs. Gable stood in her front yard, waving her arms wildly. The sight of the fallen tree, partially resting on the roof of the other house, made her feel as though she might simply cease to exist.
