He blinked, struggling to process what he was seeing. The sky, usually framed by the tree's canopy, was now wide open. The absence felt… wrong. He took a tentative step towards the fence.

He knew that the falling tree had been leaning. He’d noticed it on his morning walk just yesterday, the angle of the lean, the way it just looked ready to fall. He'd thought about saying something to his neighbor.

Now, he just felt… numb. He felt frozen. He kept touching his pocket, reaching for the phone but not pulling it out. He couldn't move. He stood there, like a statue, staring at the debris.
