The world seemed to shrink around John. The perfectly staged kitchen, devoid of any lived-in feel, was a taunt. The listing's price tag felt like a physical blow. A tightness gripped his chest, making it difficult to expand his lungs.

He grabbed the nearest object, a worn, leather-bound book from the shelf, and clutched it. He knew the house was old, the foundation perhaps not perfect, but it was still his home.

His fingers tightened on the spine of the book. He wanted to scream. He knew he should look away, but he was trapped, chained to his computer. He had to read more.
