The letter arrived in the mail: “…property records indicate a homicide….” The words blurred before Emily’s eyes. She crumpled the letter in her fist. Her jaw tightened, and she felt a tremor pass through her.

She locked the front door, then moved from room to room, meticulously checking every window, every corner. The creaks of the floorboards, usually a minor annoyance, now sounded like whispers. The shadows danced with menace. The once-familiar house now felt alien.

She found herself in the attic, a place she rarely visited. Dust motes swirled in the single ray of sunlight that penetrated the gloom. She felt a shiver run down her spine and then a surge of anger and resentment for this house. She wanted to scream.
