The real estate agent's casual remark – "…someone met an unfortunate end in the garden…" – now echoed in Maria’s head. She stood in front of the window, staring out at the manicured lawn, once her pride and joy. The flowers, which had bloomed so beautifully, suddenly seemed to mock her.

She went outside, unable to bear the thought of staying indoors. She walked slowly, her eyes scanning the ground. The sunlight felt oppressive, the birdsong unsettling. She felt a presence, an invisible weight, in the air.

She returned to the house, but she did not go in. She sat on the porch swing, rocking gently, hoping to quell the unease. The swing squeaked rhythmically, the sound amplifying the silence. She closed her eyes, trying to focus on her breathing.
