"Mom, can we talk?" Chloe's voice cracked. Her mother, mid-sentence about a local bake sale, stopped, a confused look on her face. Chloe, usually composed, was a mess. She couldn’t sit still, pacing the small living room.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” Her mother’s brow furrowed with concern. Chloe held up the envelope from the lawyer. Inside was a letter, the blunt declaration of a half-sister, a woman named Emily, the product of a secret from her father's past. Chloe’s vision blurred.

Her mother’s face slowly drained of color. Chloe watched, stunned, as her mother's composure crumbled. The world was spinning. She fought back the urge to flee the room.
