The photograph, slipped into the official document, showed a young man with Liam's father's eyes, but a different mouth. A half-brother named Thomas. Liam felt a cold wave wash over him, leaving him feeling hollowed out. He was stranded.

He crumpled the document, then smoothed it out, repeating the action over and over. He stood up abruptly and started pacing in a tight circle. His apartment, once a sanctuary, now felt suffocating, filled with a silence that screamed accusations.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to smash something. He collapsed on the sofa, burying his face in his hands, trying to think, trying to feel, but his mind was blank.
