“Congratulations, you’ve been matched with a first-degree relative,” the email read, the words a digital punch to the gut. The world contracted. For Jasper, the news was a sudden and violent rupture. He felt as if his foundations had been ripped away.

He slammed his laptop shut, the screen flashing, a moment later, nothing but a black void. He bolted from his chair, his chair nearly falling over. He needed to be away. He needed air.

He drove aimlessly, the scenery a blur. The engine roared, mirroring the turmoil inside him. He pulled over, leaning his head against the steering wheel, and let out a long, shuddering breath.
