"A secret…a secret?" Michael whispered, his voice shaky. He re-read the printout. He’d found the paper in a drawer, tucked under her lingerie. It detailed the account, the interest, the staggering amount of money.

He felt a strange lightness in his head, as though he was floating above himself. The world around him seemed muted, the colors faded. He walked into the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water, his hand unsteady. The water spilled, soaking the countertop, but he didn't notice.

He ran his fingers through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't made in years. The betrayal was like a bitter taste in his mouth. How could she? The question hammered in his brain.
