It was the password recovery email that did it. Mark had been trying to access their joint email when he saw it: a request to reset the password for a private account. He clicked the link, and there it was: a confirmation of an account.

He felt a cold dread creep into his bones. His limbs felt heavy, and his breath came in short, shallow gasps. He stood up abruptly, pacing the length of their small bedroom. He could feel his pulse pounding in his ears.

He couldn't think straight. He needed air. He needed to be away from the computer. He stumbled outside, into the garden, and stared up at the sky, as if searching for answers. He felt trapped.
