The physical cash, in a hidden shoebox. That’s what did it. The sheer volume. Anna had always felt something wasn’t right, but never had any proof. Now, seeing the stacks of bills, she felt a wave of icy shock. It made her chest tighten, and the muscles in her neck ached.

She slowly sank onto the bed, the shoebox falling to the floor with a soft thud. Her eyes flicked around the room, as if trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Every object seemed to shift in the light.

She felt a tremor in her hands. Her mind raced, the thoughts colliding in a confused jumble. All the small gestures, every loving word suddenly felt hollow, a performance, a lie.
