He had just been complaining to his wife about his salary, and now his neighbor, Mr. Dubois, had just arrived home in a helicopter. A helicopter! It landed in his perfectly manicured back garden.

He felt like the ground beneath him was crumbling. His jaw ached from clenching. He tried to speak, to make a joke, but the words wouldn’t come. He just stood there, staring at the gleaming machine, a vortex of dread and self-doubt forming in his stomach. He was out there staring for what felt like hours, and he didn't know why.
