Liam stared at the screen, the university president’s statement a harsh pronouncement against the backdrop of his normally vibrant homepage. His stomach churned. He hadn't been to class in two weeks, too busy working to pay tuition and rent. This meant that the whole endeavor had been a waste of time.

His breath hitched. He replayed the message again, the words echoing in the sudden silence of the library. It couldn't be happening. He rubbed his temples, a headache blooming behind his eyes. He slumped back in his chair, feeling the blood drain from his face.

He had to get out. He rose, bumping into the desk. The books there nearly fell, but he caught them. He left his things there, and practically ran out of the building. His future – the one he'd been carefully constructing – had been ripped away in an instant.
