The lilies were placed on her desk at work. No one had seen anyone deliver them. Claire felt her hands begin to shake, and she gripped the edge of her desk to steady herself. Her mouth was dry. She looked at the floral arrangement and started to feel a desperate need to know.

She looked around the room, scrutinizing her coworkers. Had someone sent them, and were they watching her? The light from the window seemed harsh, illuminating every detail, every crease in her face. The silence of the office felt suddenly oppressive, as if everyone was holding their breath, waiting.
