The book was open to a chapter titled, "The Lie of Love." Claire felt a shiver run down her spine as she read a passage that was clearly describing their anniversary dinner, but with distorted details. Her hands, clammy and trembling, clutched the edge of the kitchen counter. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she reread a line that referred to her as a "control freak."

She felt a desperate need to find him, to confront him. She grabbed her keys, her fingers fumbling with the lock. The air in the apartment felt thick, stagnant. She needed to escape this suffocating feeling, this feeling of being trapped.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows, making the world seem unfamiliar. She jumped in her car, the sudden roar of the engine a small comfort. Her chest constricted. She had to find him. Now.
