The room seemed to spin around Leo. "Become fluent in Italian," "Learn to fly a plane," "Get a tattoo." This from Sarah, his meticulous, organized Sarah. A cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach.

He sat heavily on the bed, staring at the list, unable to tear his gaze away. The familiar scent of her perfume, usually comforting, now seemed cloying. He pictured her, with her secrets, her hidden ambitions. He felt a profound sense of disorientation.

He rose from the bed and paced the room, unable to settle. He picked up his keys and wallet, then just as quickly dropped them. He felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to scream. The silence of the apartment was suffocating.
