Her mind seemed to spin. "Just a little space for some pumpkins," the words of Mrs. Davis, her neighbor, repeated themselves in her head. The perfect symmetry of her yard felt like it was crumbling. She felt a sudden, sharp pain in her chest. The thought of something being altered, of the order being disturbed, was almost too much to bear.

"I… I’ll consider it," she whispered, her voice barely a breath. Her eyes darted around, searching for a place to hide. She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Once inside, she locked every door and window. She sat in the darkest room, hugging herself, her body trembling. The world felt chaotic and unpredictable. She needed to regain control.
