The cheerful music from the radio seemed mocking as she stared at the letter. It felt like a physical weight in her hands. A shiver ran down her spine, followed by a sudden flush of heat.

She threw the letter on the table, the action sharp and violent. She found herself compulsively cleaning, scrubbing the kitchen counter with a ferocious intensity. Each swipe of the cloth was an attempt to erase the unwelcome news.

She tried to distract herself by watching television, but the images flickered meaninglessly before her eyes. The world outside the window seemed to blur at the edges. She felt a deep, pervasive sense of unease that settled in her bones.
