"Can you hear that?" Sarah asked, her voice high and strained. Her husband, Mark, barely looked up from his newspaper. She was jumpy, he thought.

The noise had started days ago. She was convinced it was aimed at her, somehow. She claimed that the neighbor was purposefully making it loud enough to disturb her.

He sighed, trying to keep the irritation from his voice. "It's just construction, honey."

She turned from him and abruptly stormed out of the house. He heard her footsteps, loud and agitated, as she stomped around the garden, muttering under her breath. He returned to his newspaper, but the sound of the hammering began to grate.
