The pawn shop bell jingled, a sound that made Elias jump. His breath hitched in his chest. He clutched the crumpled receipt in his sweaty hand, the pawn shop's address and the item description – "Gold ring, likely antique, with central diamond." His grandmother, Agnes, had worn a similar ring, a family heirloom supposedly lost years ago. He hadn't told anyone he was coming here.

His heart hammered against his ribs as he scanned the displays. The air in the shop felt thick, heavy with unseen eyes. He imagined the shopkeeper watching him, sizing him up, judging him. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, feeling exposed. He needed to find that ring.

He cleared his throat, trying to sound casual. "Excuse me," he mumbled, his voice cracking slightly. "I'm looking for... something specific." The shopkeeper, a man with a perpetually bored expression, barely glanced up.

Elias focused on a small, velvet-lined box. Inside, the ring. A familiar sparkle caught the light. He leaned in, his vision narrowing. He could practically hear someone whisper his name, a phantom sound in the stale air. He knew this ring, and knew it was hers.
