"Did you take my keys?" his father asked, his voice calm, but his eyes were sharp. She froze. "No," she replied, her voice barely a whisper. She glanced around the living room, her eyes darting between the familiar objects.

The question hung in the air, a silent accusation. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She felt the blood drain from her face.

Later, she found the keys in her pocket. She had no memory of putting them there. Her hands started to shake. The world felt unstable, uncertain.

She felt it then, the chilling presence. She was not safe. The walls were closing in, and she had nowhere left to go.
