He glared at the departure board, each updated time a fresh stab of anxiety. His flight, which would take him to his beloved, was delayed. He felt a cold dread settling in his gut, like an unwelcome guest.

He remembered a past slight, an argument at the coffee shop, a cross word with his neighbor. Had he offended someone? Was this retribution? He found himself tracing the outline of his phone.

He retreated to a corner, hunching his shoulders. The air conditioning blasted, but he was drenched in sweat. He watched the shadows of the other passengers lengthen and distort. He looked around him, and he could not shake the feeling that he was being watched.
