The familiar scent of coffee in the coffee shop was now tainted with dread. Alex watched the door, expecting, yet dreading, the arrival of his mentor, Mrs. Peterson. But she wouldn't come.

He sat alone in their usual booth. He reviewed their last conversation, trying to uncover some sort of hint. He replayed the scene in his mind, examining his every word, every gesture.

He jumped at the sudden clatter of a dropped plate, his heart pounding. The other customers seemed to be staring at him. He abruptly stood up and left, the unanswered questions weighing heavily on him. He felt the cold air hit his face.
