He stayed glued to his friend, using him as a shield against the impending threat. He listened intently to every word, hoping to appear engaged, normal. His friend was nice. He felt safe with his friend.

His eyes darted across the room, constantly checking for movement, for a sign. He needed to be alert. He had to be prepared. He felt that people could sense his unease, the internal war.

He excused himself to the restroom and splashed water on his face. The cold shock provided only temporary relief. He saw him in the mirror behind him.
