The air in the gallery was thick with a tension she couldn't explain. Liam’s art opening, a significant career milestone, felt tainted. He'd mentioned, casually, that his funding came from "a private benefactor," a detail he'd always shied away from. Now, in light of a cryptic conversation from the previous evening, it felt suspect.

She kept noticing Liam's glances, quick, furtive movements. He seemed on edge, like he was constantly expecting to be exposed. He’d barely looked at her all night. She watched him talking animatedly with a group of people, his laughter sounding forced, unnatural. She found herself scanning the room, trying to piece together the truth.

She felt a tremor in her hands. The intricate sculptures, the bright lights, the cheerful chatter… all of it seemed artificial, hollow. She felt a need to escape, to breathe, to sort it all out. She subtly pulled away from the crowd and sought the bathroom.
