"Are you sure you want to go to the class field trip?" Mark asked, his voice a little too high, a little too strained. His daughter, Sarah, looked at him with confusion. "Yes, Dad, why wouldn't I?" He rubbed his hands together, then scrubbed at his eyes. He'd looked into Mr. Davis's eyes at the meet-the-teacher night. They’d been too friendly, too knowing. He’d wanted to ask if he’d been a good student, if he remembered the things. Instead, he’d just offered a strained, “Good to see you again.”
