"He's a wonderful man, so enthusiastic about his subject," his wife said, beaming, after a parent-teacher conference. He forced a smile. Mr. Carter was his old high school history teacher. The man, a looming figure then, remained the same. His mind raced, recalling the details he'd hoped were forgotten. He had an aversion to the class and a suspicion that, perhaps, he wasn't as good as he'd wanted to be. He began to subtly influence his son's choices, steering him away from history, a desperate attempt to rewrite a story he felt was still being written.
