The absence was a physical ache. She'd driven that car every day for years. Now, nothing. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, as if a thousand tiny eyes were studying her.

She scanned the street, searching for clues, for an explanation. Every shadow felt suspicious, every passing car a potential threat. Her breath hitched in her throat, her chest was tight.

She closed the blinds, shut the curtains, double-locked the doors, and the windows. She needed to feel safe. She needed to breathe. She checked all the rooms, moving quickly.
