He locked the front door again, even though he'd just done it five minutes ago. A chill snaked through his veins as he stared at the attic door, a portal to a past he didn't fully understand. His mother’s legacy was stored up there.

Each item, each sentence, seemed to be judging him. He grabbed a forgotten pencil, a small wooden toy with a chipped paint job, and felt as if he was being watched. The air was heavy, the silence stifling.

He remembered her constant questions growing up: "What did you say to Mrs. Peterson today?" "Are you eating enough vegetables?" Was it all a manipulation, a carefully crafted plan to control him?

His pulse hammered in his ears as he descended the stairs, clutching the pencil. He needed to leave, to get away from these silent, accusing artifacts. The house felt like a cage.
