The basement was cold and damp, a perfect incubator for unease. He ran his hand over the dusty boxes, each one labeled with his mother's precise handwriting. "High School Papers." "College Applications." He felt his stomach clench.

He glanced over his shoulder. He imagined her ghost standing in the shadows, her eyes boring into him. Had she been recording every moment of his life, storing it away like some sort of bizarre data collection?

He picked up a faded photograph. He remembered the day it was taken. It felt like a trap. The camera, the smiles, were all part of a larger, unknown design.

He slammed the box shut, the sound echoing in the silent room. He couldn't stay here. He felt like he was suffocating, trapped in a web of memories.
