The ringing phone jolted Mark awake. He fumbled for it, his hand trembling. The caller ID displayed an unknown number. He considered not answering. Finally, with a sigh, he picked up. “Hello?”

A crackly voice on the other end gave a name, not his. He quickly hung up the phone. A cold sweat. The number was blocked on his cell. He changed the password to his wifi.

He paced the living room, a restless energy coursing through him. He checked the locks on the doors, the windows. The blinds. His breath came in shallow gasps. Someone knew. Someone was watching.

He looked out the window. Nothing. But the feeling remained, a knot of unease twisting in his stomach. He wasn’t safe.
