The text messages were relentless. Congratulations. So happy for you. She knew, even before she read them, the tone of smugness that would be inherent in each message. Jess scrolled through her phone, her thumb hovering over the "block" button. She imagined her friends, the ones who made the team, already strategizing without her, planning celebrations she wouldn't be invited to. Every notification was a stab. The glow of the screen made her eyes hurt. She dropped the phone on the bed, and sank into the pillows, her breath shallow, her heart racing.
