The window looked out onto a blank brick wall. It was better than looking at the parking lot, he decided. The cars could be watching. He'd installed a security lock on his door, even though the office was in a secure building.

He jumped when his new coworker tapped on the door. He asked if he could borrow a stapler, and the question felt loaded, as if designed to elicit a reaction. He stammered, then retrieved it as fast as possible.

He was sure the office’s HR department was keeping tabs on him. He deleted his web browsing history, and removed his social media accounts. Every email seemed like a test, every task was a tightrope walk.
