She paced the length of her tiny apartment, the linoleum floorboards squeaking beneath her weight. The balloon arch she'd bought, still deflated in the corner, seemed to sag with a profound sense of doom. The silence was the worst part, thick and heavy, pressing down on her.

A bead of sweat trickled down her temple. She kept checking her phone, expecting a text, a call, something to confirm her suspicions. Each buzz, each ping, sent a jolt of anxiety through her. The anticipation was eating her alive. They knew. She was sure of it.

She walked to the window and stared at the street. Each passing car, each pedestrian, seemed to be part of a conspiracy. Were they watching? Were they laughing? The shadows seemed to twist and contort, taking on sinister shapes. She gripped the windowsill, knuckles white, and squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the rising tide of unease.
