The house was dark, the curtains drawn. He had locked all the doors, triple-checked the windows. He sat in the corner of his living room, clutching a blanket around himself. The anticipation was gone, replaced by a deep, gnawing fear.

He replayed the cancellation text message over and over in his mind, searching for hidden clues, hidden meanings. Every detail felt significant, every word a subtle betrayal. He felt like he was being mocked.

He didn’t know what they were planning, but he was certain it wasn’t good. The shadows danced in the periphery of his vision. He could feel it in his bones. He closed his eyes, his breathing shallow and rapid, waiting.
