The office air conditioning blasted a frigid wind, chilling his skin despite the late summer heat. He’d seen the paystub. He knew. His own accomplishments felt diminished, meaningless. He kept replaying the conversation he’d had with his manager yesterday, searching for clues, for an explanation.

He couldn't focus on his work. The spreadsheet of numbers blurred before his eyes. He kept checking the security cameras, certain someone was talking behind his back. He felt his heart rate increase every time his phone buzzed.

He began leaving the office late, hoping to be seen as a valuable member of the team. He wanted to show everyone that he was worthy of his position. He wanted to scream at the sky, he wanted to go home.
