The hum of the printer was amplified, a constant drone that grated on his nerves. He'd seen the email with the subject line "Important Announcement" and felt sick to his stomach. He was almost certain it would be about him.

He was jumpy, his senses on high alert. The slightest noise made him flinch. He found himself jumping up when the door opened. Even the way his boss greeted him this morning seemed different, calculated.

He started coming in early and leaving late, determined to outwork everyone. He would stare at the computer screen, willing himself to focus, but his thoughts were a chaotic mess. The office felt like a cage.
