He heard the news from a friend. "That bakery, the one you love, is closing." He felt his insides clench. The world began to spin.

He immediately called the bakery. The phone rang and rang. He felt the blood drain from his face. He hung up. He called again. Same result. His breathing became rapid and shallow.

He drove there, his hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. The closer he got, the more uneasy he became. He saw a moving van parked outside. The windows were boarded up. He saw no one.

He felt the intense, burning heat rise in his chest. He was sure someone was watching him from behind the boarded-up windows. He drove away, his vision blurred by tears.
