The ringing phone startled Sarah, making her jump. She eyed it warily, as if it were a venomous snake. The "Velvet Dream" cookie, once her family’s secret, now bore the name "Midnight Kiss" at every grocery store.

Her breath hitched as she answered. “Hello?” she croaked. The voice on the other end, friendly and enthusiastic, was selling her kitchen equipment. A new oven. "Oh great, just what I need," she mumbled, forcing a smile into her voice.

As soon as the call ended, she yanked the phone cord from the wall. She felt a cold prickling sensation on her skin, as if eyes were on her. She had a sudden, overwhelming urge to hide.
