The realtor’s voice, honeyed and false, buzzed in her ears. Each carefully chosen word felt like a deliberate manipulation, a subtle attempt to undermine her. She kept interrupting, demanding reassurance, questioning every detail.

She watched the construction workers with hawk-like intensity, their movements scrutinized. Their uniforms, their equipment, even the way they chewed their gum – all were analyzed for hidden motives.

Her stomach churned. The scent of gasoline and fresh-cut wood, usually invigorating, now filled her with a sense of dread. She felt the need to leave, to escape, but her feet were glued to the ground.
