The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like a death knell. David followed Emily from room to room, his gaze constantly searching. The idea of the dog was making him anxious.

Emily had just signed the adoption papers. “It’ll be great,” she’d said, her voice filled with excitement. But he knew. He knew what would happen. It would sniff at his things, leave its hair everywhere, and judge him. It would hate him.

He felt a prickling sensation on the back of his neck. Every shadow seemed to shift and writhe. He had to be careful. He kept a knife at the ready, just in case. "I think… I need some fresh air," he said, already heading for the door.
