The invitation felt heavy in Eleanor's hand, almost like lead. She reread the words: “A Celebration of Harold and Carol’s Retirement.” It felt like a trap. Every detail, the font, the paper stock, the placement of the RSVP, seemed designed to scrutinize her response. She’d spent an hour choosing the perfect outfit, a dress that was presentable but not attention-grabbing. Even the color, a dull olive, felt like a statement—an attempt to fade into the background.

Her breath hitched as she walked to the podium. The microphone loomed, a black monolith. Faces, blurry with the distance and her internal tremors, swam before her.
