"Unfair," she breathed, her voice barely above a whisper. The eviction notice felt like a physical blow. The apartment, her sanctuary, suddenly felt like a prison. She flinched at the sound of the wind, certain it carried whispers, accusations.

She looked out the window, at the world she no longer trusted. The people on the street seemed to be plotting, their smiles concealing ulterior motives. She saw them watching her, judging her.

She barricaded the door and bolted the windows. She turned off the lights and sat in the dark, her heart pounding. She had to stay hidden. She was sure they were coming. She had to be ready. She had to protect herself.
