Gemotions

He sat in the dark, the only light the flickering glow of his phone screen. Rain lashed against the windows, a relentless assault. He’d seen the forecast, of course, the ominous warnings about high winds. He’d even considered calling the city, but… they wouldn't care.

He ran his fingers over the smooth surface of his coffee table. He felt exposed, vulnerable. Everything felt like a trap, waiting to spring. He imagined the branches tearing through his roof, the house becoming a cage.

He kept glancing at the clock. Waiting. He didn't know what for, exactly. He just knew something was going to happen. He had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He wasn't sure why, but he knew he wasn't safe.

He heard a crack outside. A brief, sharp sound that made him jump. He shut off his phone, plunging himself into complete darkness.
