He hadn't slept in two days. The branches of the tree, even when standing, had felt like a threat. Now, they were on the ground, and he felt his fear ratcheting up to a whole new level.

He sat by the window, watching the emergency vehicles. He could see his neighbor, standing in his driveway, looking toward his house. Their eyes met for a fraction of a second.

He felt a prickling sensation on his skin, a burning feeling that was quickly spreading. He began hyperventilating, struggling to catch his breath. The trees, the wind, the storm, his neighbor – it all felt like a carefully constructed plan.

He turned and slowly began boarding up the windows.
